   But you do need to be putting equal effort into the relationship.

   And from what you have in your post, he is putting time, money and effort into trying to get to see you, and you are not.

   And unless your friend lives at the beach, you are not going to the beach to see them, you are going on a vacation with them.

   Now look at it from his point of view, you are not putting in equal effort into the relationship, you would rather have a vacation with your friend, who you likely see on a regular basis, than see him if you were him would you seriously want to continue such a one sided relationship?
