As a woman who has a lot of stereotypical “male” hobbies, I end up in the same position as you a lot of the time. I tend to hang out with men a lot because of it and they think “wow, a cool girl that I have a lot in common with!” So they end up getting close to you in that way and think you’re one of the “cool ones” and that ends up just being a stepping stone into developing a crush on you.
Have you tried telling him you'd like him to initiate some conversations? Some peoples brains don't work like others, he may not even think about it.
If you tell him, in a nice way, how you feel, and what you would like, he gets a chance to adjust to that. If he still chooses not to, you can worry about communication compability
