I definitely see why you would want these kind of conversations to flow naturally and it’s not weird to want that. Unfortunately, it seems your wife doesn’t know how to comfortably engage in those kinds of conversations and her lack of experience probably makes her insecure in those conversations. One of the common stress responses is a freeze/fawn response, where people will try to do the least offensive thing possible to get past the stressor. So for her, she asks you to lead the conversation, so she knows she can’t mess it up or she has nothing to say because she’s terrified of your response. Not as a slight to you at all. Just that she’s never been so intimate with another person and doesn’t have prior experience with being able to be judged by someone that mattered. Having the structure and implied fun of a game, could really help her see that intimacy isn’t scary, it’s beautiful and fun. Plus you could always start with questions from the game and it will probably develop into a more natural conversation as you talk. Like, think of having deep conversations as another language, you speak fluently, but your wife needs the introductory class.
