I don't know if I'd call it the right thing to do. He told OP to keep it when OP was ready to pay it. Now that OP's used it he wants it back. A person should have enough sense to realize this puts OP into a worse situation than ever.

No kid should grow up in a hostile home. Parents who fight all the time suck for the children and you are way past the point where your own feelings are more important. Make a plan to co-parent, break up, and in the future don’t think that having a kid will fix a shit relationship.
