This is like the parable of the Good Shepherd who finds his lost lamp, and breaks it's leg before carrying it back. Once the lamb's leg healed, it has learned to not stray too far from the herd.
As brutal as this story is to read, I find the analogy fitting. I hope that when OP's dad's arm heals, he has learned not to behave in such an awful manner.
