From a parent with a special needs kid: find an all inclusive school. You don’t have to worry about it quite as much at 5, 7 and 8 is where things start to happen. Make sure kiddo gets an IEP from the get go, so he is set up for success. I fully understand you and your BF’s fears, but things will go the way they go if you work or not. You could always start off part time just to give yourself that time and money, but be available on other days! This doesn’t sound controlling to me, it sounds like nervous parents with a special needs kiddo. Totally get it. He will do great, a couple weeks in you’ll see that you can go to work without fear.
Get that IEP before he starts, this will help a ton when it comes to staff dealing with any behaviors. Make sure he gets an eval through the school before starting so they can start any needed services. Maybe get all of that squared away and your first meeting with staff, then go back to work.

my mother does work and they earn roughly the same so hes not the sole provider
Get another one that is just yours! Slowly start saving four months expenses in it. It's fuck you money so if he cheats or tries to screw you over you can walk away and have fall back. He's planning his exit you should too. You oversee the budget it's not hot to take a little bit to hide away.
