If you're not big fans of religion in general- don't be godparents. everyone seems to be having a different interpretation of what a godparents means. As a Catholic, I was taught that wasn't necessarily who you would go to if your parents died. It was more who was responsible for helping you in the religious aspects of your life. So your godparents should be there and support you as you receive the sacraments- which is engaging in religion.
So if you don't like religion, this really isn't the job for you, because the job is meant to be a support of their religious development.
