Your rationale is somewhat strange for why trauma makes someone better, but it's not irrational. I wouldn't tell him you love him for his suffering though, or anyone for that matter… Maybe find more approachable reasons to explain how and why you love him. I'd feel weird if someone told me about their love for me centering around my trauma, etc.
