I have a slightly different take on BF’s motivation. You don’t say specifically but you use the word “confessed”, so I assumed the cousin had been tried, convicted, served a sentence.
As a family member, the BF may hope the cousin is a changed man, and spends time with him as a way of supporting that.
That said, he lied to you about it then turned it on you. And there’s no way to know if the cousin is indeed a “changed man”, so I would never have kids around him.
I’d leave the relationship. You don’t need all this risk in your life.
