This could be a fair compromise in my opinion.
They get engaged before moving in together, but wait with marriage for a few years to make sure they're also compatible to share a living space for the rest of their lives.
I personally don't understand why longer engagements aren't more the norm. My husband and I were engaged for two years, and it was actually a great time to get our ducks in order and smooth out some issues in our relationship before fully committing. Getting married has not been an adjustment at all for either of us, bc we had a great two year practice run.
