This will sound like a nothing suggestion – Dr. Nicole LePera- look at some her YouTube videos – get her books. I just went through one of the worst mental health periods of my life and I've had issues since I was a kid (I'm 44) – I've seen psychiatrists, psychologists, psycho therapists and gave up on anyone ever being able to help me. But even Dr. Nicole's tweets make me see things differently – she gets it.
On one hand, you don't have any obligation to protect her. As long as you're not going out of your way to talk about it, I don't see how you'd be seen as the smaller person. Just tell the truth when people ask about it.
On the other hand, I can see how feeling like it was my job to inform everyone would suck. You could say something like, “were not together anymore. Talk to her and Joe if you want the gory details.” I think that could tell people what's up without making you rehash it all the time.
I think it's all down to your preferences and relationships. You might feel comfortable talking to some friends more than others. I agree with the comment to prepare to find new friends, but if your friends are worth a damn, you won't be the one who gets ostracized.

Honestly, I don't know how I would handle this.
