Sorry, this is going to be a long reply. I hope it answers your question!
It was a new policy brought in a year ago with the employees having a say in whether it should be passed or not and the overall vote was for it even though our company is male dominated. It was made permanent based on the company's performance not dropping but actually improving. Anyone suffering from long term ailments – even depression – recieve the same benefits if they ask for it (multiple ailments can't stack, 5 days is the max).
Salary is output based so if you use it as an excuse to slack then you suffer. Raises are also defined by your team's rating of your work, so if you aren't preforming as expected or dumping your tasks on other teammates then you suffer further. I can understand the concern of people taking advantage of it, but anyone suffering to a similar extent is granted similar treatment. It may sound like a massive benefit but it simply increases the workload for other days that you work. The company does also allow flexi-hours so if you'd like to take 5 days off for personal reasons then it's possible to work overtime and take the time off once your tasks are done.
My company is still a corporate nightmare but they're pretty good at accommodating everyone I think. As long as it doesn't impact profits.
