You had this conversation before asking him to be your boyfriend. I know if was the day before, but it may have given him the impression that it applied to your previous relationship with him, and not your new one where you’re boyfriend girlfriend. He may have interpreted it as you changing your mind.
Also, the statement you give everyone from your edit is not direct enough. When I read it, at first it sounded to me like “I’ll date someone for some time until I want to move on to another person”. That might be what he thought as well, that while you date you’ll be completely exclusive, and you might break up with him eventually when you decide to find a new partner.
You can say that statement still, but you need to add a direct “I am looking for an open relationship. I want to be romantically involved with only one person, but still be able to have sex with others at the same time. You would also be free to have sex with others.”
This is what happens when Americans treat everything as sexual and make nudity for absolutely any purpose taboo. The fact is life is a body is a body and sometimes there are simply things that have to be done. America is a fucked up place.
Unintentional manipulation is still manipulation, though. No idea what to tell OP here, though, I would probably not stay with someone I cannot disagree with.
