There are 5 years between those two ages and one has JUST turned adult. It is problematic because no matter if bf works or not he’s on an entirely different maturity level
Ask them how they would feel if you asked them to repeatedly put themselves in a situation that was detrimental to their mental health. Then ask them if that's what they believe friendship is. If they say yes, get better friends. Also don't take a break from that friend, cut him off. He's shown you how much value he places in you and your friendship and that zero.
From what you've written, it sounds like a change in location would be best for you – nearer to family and friends. This is a lot on your plate – getting a divorce, selling a jointly owned house, moving cross country. As much as all this is, I don't think trying to figure out a way to move dogs cross country and finding a place that would allow pets is in your best interest. Other posters have indicated that the dogs will be well taken care of by your wife.
