I agree. I am also confused by how much she professes to enjoy living alone, I would be confused as her BF if she said that coupled with the engagement ring rule. OP may be her own problem/issue.
Maybe change the ring rule to a time range spent in the relationship. also keep in mind dating a person that doesn’t live! with you can be more expensive. Dinners out are expensive and dating is very very hot on the potential savings.
Well, you are essentially breaking up with her (not that you were really a couple, though). I always say be vague and limited in explaining the reasons for a breakup. Say something meaningless like I don't see us having a future together. If you do touch on the other night, just say you enjoyed yourself but don't want to do it again. “I don't want to” is a sufficient explanation.
Someone who respects you will respect your right to make your own decisions. (That being said, I wouldn't advise discussing it with him if there's no reason to bring it up. Respecting your decision doesn't obligate him to tell you he supports it.)
I wonder how much of a burden is, or will be, placed on your relationship by his refusal to treat his own conditions.
