I think there's not anything you could do or even should do other than be calm, understanding and respectful of their decision. You said they didn't know the situation without context but you've given context here and I can understand their decision. You sound like you've made excellent and huge strides in turning your life around in the past year and you should be very proud of that! But from an outsider, a little over a year with about a decade or more of self harm and other choices that many parents don't want their kids around, you can see that they would need a lot more time of observing someone who is stable. All you can do is continue as you are and hope they will be kind and understanding after they see that you and your partner are not a toxic combination anymore. Because this is on him too.
