I was in that boat as well. Met a fantastic girl during summer who ended up moving about 600 miles away.
We tried to make it work, and we always made a point to talk every day, see each other as often as we could, and to take at least one trip together during the summer.
It took work, open communication and empathy from both of us, and we got very close to breaking up a few times but we always talked it out, and refused to stop the conversation until we had worked out whatever the issue was.
Almost 10 years later and we now live! together (after 9 years LDR), and we couldn't imagine being with anyone else. But it does take work, and a selfless personality. Either way, doesn't hurt to try!
Also, you mentioned cutting off contact for those 5 months. If you want to be with this person, that is the last thing you should do. Communication is the key to a lasting relationship, and by cutting off contact you would be directly contributing to eventual resentment, or worse, indifference towards each other.
