If her being overwhelmed was the issue, then she needs to have healthy coping mechanisms for when she feels that way, such that she can handle life getting rough with out having to break up. Often that means being good at boundaries and depending on herself (ie learning to not being a people pleaser which is common for women her age), having a partner good with emotional support skills (so she knows her feelings and needs are respected) and learning to seek support and help from others when feeling overwhelmed rather than withdraw.
