Hi, I was in a situation somewhat like your son’s (my parents helped me with my kids when I was very down on my luck), and the help my parents gave me made all the difference in the world.
In 2016 my husband of 10 years and I split, and my young kids and I moved back in with my parents. I had no degree, no job, no way of supporting myself, much less my two kids. I was so depressed and couldn’t see a way out so I attempted suicide. After extensive therapy and a lot of support from my parents, I applied to a local college, and I now have a BS in computer science and make $80k a year in a full time remote position as a junior in my field.
I never thought I could finish a degree. I never dreamed I would be able to support my family. Without my parents helping me with my kids, I don’t think I could’ve done it.
I imagine your son would appreciate any sort of help you’d be willing to give him that could start him down the path to obtaining that STEM degree. Good luck to all of you, it will be naked but it will be so, so worth it.
