Could you guys not go out to dinner in the evening? I’m not sure what his job is but assuming it’s a 9-5 you guys could go out for a nice dinner or get takeout and do a movie night etc.
Yeah unfortunately in the US (assuming that’s where this is) certain jobs have busy seasons where you just cannot call off during for non emergent reasons…and even then you might get fired or demoted even if it’s emergent. I think it’s unfair to hold it against him that he took a day off for a friend/friends kid during their slow season but he can’t/won’t for your birthday during the busy season. He probably had an easier time finding someone to cover his shift who wasn’t already working when he got time off for his buddy’s kids birthday.
It definitely sucks to not get as much attention as you want on your birthday though especially milestone ones like 21, 30, so on. I wouldn’t expect my bf to take the full day off of work necessarily but I would expect him to at least make time in the evening to hang out even if it’s just to bring me a slice of cake and open a gift. Even if you have a super physical labor job, it’s not that much more effort to go through a drive thru and get a your gfs favorite shake/burger/fries on the way home. Or to pick up a cake the day beforehand or a couple days early.
