Sorry to tell you that this is not a normal long term schedule most if not all branches have regulations regarding a certain number of hours of sleep in-between shifts. This number is usually 8 hours. Maybe you get 16 hour days for a couple weeks every now and then during rough times but regularly coming home at midnight and back at it at 4 am is abnormal and requires high level approval to do even a few times. And even still that means time off to accommodate working for so long.
You should look up regulation for this as branch specific rules and the UCMJ is public.
Regardless of his reason if he wants to leave let him. Love your kids and lean on your family it’ll be okay.
