If you have to lie to paint a better image of yourself then A) Your not that confident in your abilities B) Your willing to paint an image of yourself that is false and C) You have no problem being deceitful if it benefits you D) Your likely to get yourself into positions that make you look negatively in front of others, and OPs situation is a perfect example of that.
