One thing about people is that very rarely would you ever find someone going out of their way so much outside the bounds of a friendship. Can it happen? Yes absolutely, but that bond grows over time through pain and hardship, not just randomly hanging out at someone'e beck and call. You may read other posts here about husbands and wives expressing the same idea, if men and women can be friends if they have a partner. Yes they can, though most of the 'friendship' often goes outside the borders of what normal friends do. Once any normal boundary is crossed then anything goes out the window.
Having said that, it is unfortunate about the breakup but it was for the best. It is better to date people who are interested in us and our lives.
