  1. Yeah but if you go out on date nights and can’t communicate then what’s the point? I’m also comfortable in silence but I will always try to make my partner laugh and smile.

  2. What are you talking about? It’s like you don’t know what a boundary is.

I am not willing to date someone that smokes weed. If you want to smoke weed, I would rather end the relationship. Would you like to stay in the relationship with me, or are you going to keep smoking?

That is a boundary and a question that requires a response. The other party then gets to decide if they want to keep smoking, or if they would rather the relationship end. If they say, I won’t quit smoking. Then the relationship is over right then and there. That’s how this works. If they say, I will quit smoking because I want to stay in this relationship. Then the person setting the boundary then says, great, I would love to stay in the relationship as well. Just know that it is a boundary of mine. If in the future you decide to smoke again then I am leaving the relationship because I don’t want to be with someone who smokes. Now the boundary is set and they both agree there will be no smoking. If the other person then smokes in the future, then you can try and have this same conversation again within reason, or you can enact the consequence and break up.

This is how boundaries work. Whatever you’re talking about isn’t a boundary. It is literally simply a statement of something that you don’t want to live! with, and a consequence if the other person wants to continue whatever it is that they are doing.

With my example. If they both agree no more smoking, then one person smokes and the other keeps throwing a tantrum about it and wont leave, then they didn’t set a boundary. If they get violent or yell and scream to try and force the other person to stop, then they aren’t setting a healthy boundary. I’m not sure why this is so hard. Like, I know it’s nude to actually do in reality. But it’s not hot to understand the difference.

  3. u/Interesting-Age9601, it looks like you're trying to post a throwaway submission. Your account is too young and/or your comment karma is too low.

The right way to do it is to create a brand new Reddit account that begins with ThrowRA.

  4. My husband was a card carrying member of the Young Republicans of Ohio when we met. I'm a down the line Independent. I asked him specifically about his views and after 20+ years together, he's Independent but Fiscally Conservative and I'm Independent but Socially Liberal. Find your tribe. It'll work itself out.

  5. Okay, this kind of thing is what I was alluding too in asking about other issues. Somebody that torn up by the one that got away is often a narc or sociopath and bringing it up as a method of controlling the other person. OP, take this as a gift. Spin it as him breaking up with you and you not being good enough for him and leave. This way he may just let you go without violence. Call family and friends and domestic violence resources for help getting out safely though. There are resources pinned at the top of r/relationship advice
