So I just talked with them yesterday to get a clearer picture…
My parents are 20K in debt in taxes/fees alone (this doesn't include other debts). They need that money by the end of this week in order to avoid thousands in further penalties. They've sold all the larger assets they could, have made efforts to downsize etc., and are coming to me as a last resort.
I have about 25K in savings, with 15K in student loan debt that is (supposedly) supposed to come out of forbearance later this year. I've been working with a financial advisor, and with the way I've been working/saving, I should be able to pay that of in full (or close to it) immediately and avoid paying any interest on it.
So, giving my parents 20K in one lump sum would totally derail me financially. Even if they do pay it back as promised, there's no way that would happen before loan repayment begins, and I'd get sucked into a debt loop like they are. Not to mention I won't be able to help myself if something were to happen to my car, health, etc.
The tricky part is my emotions… My parents have been extremely generous in not charging me rent. They insist that they feel it's their responsibility having chosen to be parents, but to me it means a lot. Plus they did give me about 3K towards college (not to mention a lifetime of care and sacrifices for me). So with everything considered I'd be happy to give (not loan) them 5K without any expectations.
However, 5K would be pointless since they would still get charged those fees and be no further ahead. So they amount of money in question feels very all-or-nothing. I want so badly to help them because I love them and want to see them happy, but I also don't want to screw myself over in the process… especially for choices that weren't mine to begin with.
Look, even the fact that he has kids with 2 women is good enough for you to run.
Maybe I'm just disgruntled lol but being a step parent is a hellish life, even if the kids are awesome.
