It’s not a friendship he’s looking for. Everything you described sounds like he’s looking for an emotional affair- he doesn’t see it as an affair because he “was upfront about it”. Personally I would want to be with someone that is proud to call me their partner instead of pretending they aren’t in a relationship with me.
